Growing up I was always bigger than the girls my age, but I was still athletic and strong, so I convinced myself that it wasn’t a big deal. I was never happy with the way I looked and yet was never able to make any headway in my journey to getting healthier. Fast forward to 2014; I was unexpectedly hospitalized for blood clots (in my brain, of all places!) and told by doctors that the risk of a stroke was too high for me to be active. If you know me; however, you know that I don’t like taking ‘no’ for an answer.

It was months before I was cleared by a doctor for physical activity and although I ran with that freedom, I really do appreciate what I learned about myself in the time that I was restricted. Not being able to go to the gym forced me to tackle some of the other elements that are crucial to a real transformation: mental and emotional barriers. In that time I began to realize that I needed to take control of my life. I had an epiphany and realized that life is too short to be unhappy with my body and if I wanted to make positive strides in other areas, my health had to come first.

This is where I started the mental and emotional journey to get healthier and truly take control of my life. Two years after my hospital stay, I am sixty pounds lighter, stronger than ever, and I’ve accomplished goals that I never thought possible. I now work as a NASM certified personal trainer and specialize in strength training and overall transformations. I am also a NASM certified Fitness Nutrition Specialist. I’ve done the leg work for myself and what’s even better is now I get to help others do the same!
